Salah assists as Liverpool draw with Brentford in Anfield farewell

Salah’s assist gave Liverpool the lead on his Anfield farewell, but Kevin Schade equalized. The result secured Champions League football for Liverpool and ended Brentford’s European hopes.

Mohamed Salah set up Curtis Jones in his final Anfield game, but Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Brentford confirmed both sides’ European fate for next season.

Mohamed Salah starred in his final Anfield appearance, but his assist only helped Liverpool to a 1-1 draw with Brentford on the last day of the Premier League season. Brentford’s wait for a win at Anfield continues since 1937, and that result means they will miss out on UEFA Conference League football next year.

Both teams had European qualification at stake going into the final-day match. The heat led to a slow start, and the first clear chance did not arrive until the 19th minute. Ryan Gravenberch’s mazy run won Liverpool a free kick in a dangerous area.

Salah took the free kick ahead of Dominik Szoboszlai and nearly made it count. His curling strike beat the wall but came back off the post.

The Liverpool veteran looked determined and soon tested former teammate Caoimhin Kelleher. Kelleher had to make a save after Salah shot from a tight angle.

Kelleher was called into action again to stop a well-struck effort from Gravenberch from the edge of the box. Rio Ngumoha then came close from a similar position.

Brentford had the best chance of the half against the run of play. Alisson Becker made himself big and pulled off a good save to deny Kevin Schade from close range.

Liverpool broke quickly from that save. Michael Kayode made a crucial block to stop Cody Gakpo’s header, and the teams went in level at half-time.

Liverpool’s Curtis Jones celebrates scoring their first goal with Mohamed Salah.

Salah remained Liverpool’s biggest threat into the second half and did not wait long to test Kelleher again.

He played a key role in the opening goal, switching to provider by whipping the ball across the box with the outside of his left foot for Curtis Jones to tap in.

Schade got another chance out of nothing, just like in the first half. This time he finished it well, heading past Alisson to level the score.

Salah could not produce a final match-winning moment. He was substituted with 20 minutes left and received a standing ovation from around Anfield.

Andy Robertson also received a warm send-off as the game neared its end. The Scot left the pitch without a win in his final appearance after nine years at the club.

The draw was enough to confirm Liverpool’s place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, even after a difficult campaign.

Brentford will head into the summer frustrated after winning just one of their last 10 matches.
