Day one of the French Open saw early exits for Krejcikova and Raducanu, while Mirra Andreeva, Marta Kostyuk and Belinda Bencic progressed in straight sets.

Marta Kostyuk beat Oksana Selekhmeteva to extend her clay winning streak. She later revealed her Kyiv home was nearly hit by a missile earlier that day...

Barbora Krejcikova, a former French Open champion, was the biggest name to fall on day one in Paris. The world number 41 lost 6-7(7), 7-6(6), 6-2 to American 26th seed Hailey Baptiste.

Krejcikova was not alone in exiting early. Fellow former Grand Slam winners Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin also lost their opening matches at Roland Garros.

Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine extended her winning run on clay to 12 matches with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oksana Selekhmeteva. Selekhmeteva was born in Russia but gained Spanish nationality four days earlier.

After the match, the Madrid Open champion said her family home in Kyiv came close to being hit by a Russian missile during a large bombardment of the Ukrainian capital earlier that Sunday.

“This morning, 100 metres from my parents' house, a missile fell,” the 15th seed said on court.

“I'm obviously very happy to be in the second round. All my thoughts and all my heart were with the people of Ukraine today. My biggest example are Ukrainian people today.”

Kostyuk will face Katie Volynets in the second round. The American advanced after beating France’s Clara Burel in straight sets.

Swiss 11th seed Belinda Bencic started play on Court Philippe Chatrier with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Austrian qualifier Sinja Kraus.

Lilli Tagger’s first match in the senior draw at Roland Garros ended in defeat. The Austrian 18-year-old and last year’s junior champion lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to Chinese 32nd seed Wang Xinyu.

Russian teenager and eighth seed Mirra Andreeva moved into the next round with a straight-sets win over France’s Fiona Ferro, who is ranked 181st.
