How Xabi Alonso Is Reshaping Chelsea’s Transfer Plans for Summer Rebuild
| Chelsea eye major summer overhaul under Xabi Alonso |
Chelsea believe Xabi Alonso can convince key players to stay and help attract new signings as they plan a summer rebuild across the squad.
Alonso’s arrival puts Fernandez, Cucurella and Palmer at heart of Chelsea plans...
Xabi Alonso will not officially take over as Chelsea manager until July 1st, but the club is already adjusting its transfer strategy to fit his arrival.
Chelsea spent weeks working behind the scenes to persuade Alonso to accept the role. We reported last week that he had become the club’s top target.
Club sources say Alonso’s modern coaching style matches Chelsea’s long-term plans. Executives also believe his reputation will help bring top players to Stamford Bridge.
This appointment represents a clear change in direction. Liam Rosenior had support inside the club after his work at sister club Strasbourg, but he did not carry the same weight as Alonso as both a player and a manager. That difference made it harder for him to command authority at the highest level.
Chelsea expect Alonso to have the opposite effect, and that could shape both arrivals and departures this summer.
On one hand, the club believes his presence will improve their chances of signing players who can strengthen the first team right away. On the other, they hope it will persuade several key players to stay committed to the project.
Three players seen as especially important are Marc Cucurella, Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer. All three are viewed as players who could thrive under Alonso’s management.
After agreeing to join Chelsea, Alonso said: “We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”
Alonso will hold the title of manager, and that changes Chelsea’s structure to a more collaborative model. He is expected to work closely with the sporting directors and club leadership on recruitment, and planning for the summer rebuild has already started.
Goalkeeper has been seen internally as a problem position for some time. If Chelsea decide not to continue with Robert Sanchez as first choice, Mike Maignan remains a target they could move for.
There is also a growing view that highly rated Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders could be ready to challenge for the No. 1 spot after impressing on loan at Strasbourg.
Chelsea are considering major changes in defense. Premier League targets include Maxence Lacroix, Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi. The recruitment team also rate Ousmane Diomande at Sporting CP highly, and scouts have been tracking Joel Ordonez closely at Club Brugge.
The futures of Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile are both unclear going into the transfer window.
There has also been speculation about Marc Cucurella’s future, but Chelsea want the Spaniard to stay. Alonso is believed to agree with that stance.
Alonso is not asking for full control over recruitment. He has asked for assurances that Chelsea will strengthen key problem areas, especially in defense.
Chelsea are also expected to look at strengthening in central midfield. Alex Scott of Bournemouth is one player being watched closely as the club considers options within the Premier League.
The club will make a renewed push to secure Enzo Fernandez’s long-term future with an improved contract, following the same approach used previously with Moises Caicedo.
We recently reported that Chelsea never saw the speculation linking Fernandez with Real Madrid as inevitable. Alonso’s arrival has only increased confidence that he can be kept at the club.
In attack, Chelsea have looked at a move for Anthony Gordon, but the winger is understood to prefer Bayern Munich as his next destination.
Creativity will still be added to the squad. Chelsea have already agreed a deal with Sporting CP for highly rated Portugal Under-21 winger Geovany Quenda, and other options remain under consideration.

The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Welcome to Chelsea, Xabi!
A new centre-forward is also expected to arrive. We previously reported that Liam Delap is likely to leave, and Dusan Vlahovic could become an option due to ongoing uncertainty over his contract at Juventus.
Chelsea must also decide what to do about Nicolas Jackson. He is valued internally at around £60 million if the club choose to sell.
With Alonso now leading Chelsea’s rebuild, this summer is shaping up to be a defining moment.
