Arsenal return to Premier League summit after narrow and nervy win over Newcastle. The Gunners opened up a three-point lead despite injuries to Havertz and Eze...

Arsenal’s dominance over Newcastle United continued with a 13th win from the last 14 Premier League home meetings, as a 1-0 victory reignited their hopes of a first title in over 20 years.

Eberechi Eze fired an early warning when his left-footed effort from the edge of the area whistled just wide, but it was a sign Newcastle didn’t heed.

A short corner drew jeers from Arsenal fans used to set-piece goals this season, but they were soon silenced. The well-worked routine ended with Eze sweeping into the top left corner after Kai Havertz teed him up.

Clear chances were rare for Newcastle in the first half, but a long-range strike nearly brought an equaliser. Sandro Tonali’s fierce 30-yard drive swerved late and almost wrong-footed David Raya, who made a smart one-handed save to preserve Arsenal’s lead.

Any injury to Kai Havertz ahead of a crucial final month - starting with Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final - was the one blot on the half for Mikel Arteta. He’ll just have been happy to see his side reach the break ahead after losing control of the game following Eze’s opener.

Losing Eze to injury within 10 minutes of the restart only added to Arteta’s problems. As his side continued to struggle for a foothold in the game, concern grew that they could yet surrender the lead.

Arsenal reached a crossroads with 20 minutes left. With just a one-goal cushion, nerves were clear inside the Emirates.

Substitute Gabriel Martinelli tried to ease those lingering nerves when he hammered goalwards from the edge of the area, but Sven Botman’s huge frame blocked the effort before it could test Nick Pope.

Those nerves were almost justified 10 minutes from time when Nick Woltemade dinked the ball over the Arsenal defence to an unmarked Yoane Wissa, who volleyed over the bar.

Dan Burn came close to a late equaliser when he headed straight at Raya at the far post, which proved to be Newcastle’s final big chance of the game.

Another unconvincing Arsenal display left more questions than answers about their title credentials, though the win does open up a three-point cushion at the summit.

A fourth successive defeat is largely inconsequential for Newcastle, whose season looks set for a mid-table finish.
