Victor Wembanyama led the San Antonio Spurs to a 115-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday, giving them a 2-1 advantage in the NBA playoff series.
The French star was a force on defense all game and took control late, breaking Minnesota’s grip with a huge fourth quarter that saw him score 16 points.
The 7-foot-4 rookie, in his first NBA postseason, ended the night in Minneapolis with 39 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks.
“I’m built for this. I love this more than anything else,” said Wembanyama.
He added: “We got the talent. We got the depth. We don't got the experience, but we don't care... We can go to the very top if we play like tonight consistently.”
Minnesota got a lift with Anthony Edwards back in the starting five.
Edwards starred in the Timberwolves’ Game 1 upset but, still working back from a knee issue, managed only 12 points off the bench in the Game 2 blowout.
He looked back to his best right away, mixing aggression with patience to finish with 32 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists. Even so, it wasn’t enough to get Minnesota over the line.
The Timberwolves opened cold, missing their first 12 shots from the floor.
Wembanyama set the tone defensively with two early blocks, forcing Minnesota to take shots away from the rim.
Minnesota responded and the teams went into the break level at 51-51.
Edwards and Wembanyama carried the scoring before halftime with 19 and 16 points respectively, while the rest of the players shot under 30% combined.
The tone turned heated after halftime. When Jaden McDaniels and Dylan Harper battled for possession, Harper fell and his head struck McDaniels’ knee.

Not long after, McDaniels and Stephon Castle exchanged shoves, and players from both teams quickly got involved in the scuffle.
Wembanyama stayed composed through it all and closed the game out himself, hitting two deep threes to lock in the win.
“Greatness,” said teammate De'Aaron Fox, of Wembanyama's showing.
“Teams are going to come out here and try to be physical with him. He fights through that, he doesn't complain, he knows what he's going to endure,” he added.
“He comes out here and he produces.”
