Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted a penalty as Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds in a result that damages Spurs’ hopes of staying up.
Mathys Tel’s night swung from highs to lows for struggling Tottenham, with Leeds fighting back to grab a point and keep themselves firmly in the relegation battle with two matches left. Roberto De Zerbi’s side had already secured Premier League survival after West Ham’s loss to Arsenal on Sunday, and they arrived in North London playing with freedom.
Leeds United had the better of a tight opening 20 minutes and came close to taking the lead when Joe Rodon’s header from close range looked certain to hit the bottom corner. Antonin Kinský pulled off a sharp save low to his left to keep it out.
Spurs responded after that scare, with Richarlison forcing Karl Darlow into a comfortable stop following a deflection, and Pascal Struijk making a crucial block to deny Pedro Porro’s goalbound shot.
Pushing to make the most of their momentum before the break, Tottenham kept pressing. Joao Palhinha blazed over from 12 yards after battling hard in the box, and Rodrigo Bentancur headed wide from a promising position.
The break didn’t slow Tottenham down, and they grabbed the lead in the 50th minute. Mathys Tel took control of a loose ball just outside the box and curled a brilliant finish into the top corner past Karl Darlow.
With nine of Tottenham’s last 12 games producing over 2.5 goals, Leeds pushed for a quick response. Richarlison volleyed over from close range after good setup play from Randal Kolo Muani.
Even with Spurs on top, Leeds were handed a big chance to equalize inside the final 20 minutes. Tel’s attempt at an overhead clearance inside his own box caught Ethan Ampadu in the face, giving Leeds a way back into the game.
Leeds’ main man Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty past Antonin Kinský to level the score.
Tel’s mistake swung momentum Leeds’ way. Substitute Lukas Nmecha looked set to score but was denied by a last-ditch block from Micky van de Ven, though the flag was up for offside anyway.
Tottenham tried to hit back after Leeds’ fightback, bringing James Maddison off the bench for his first appearance of the campaign.
And breathe! 😅

After 106 minutes of drama, @SpursOfficial gain a point in their bid for Premier League survival
It was Leeds who came closest to snatching it late on, though, when Sean Longstaff unleashed a powerful shot that Kinský tipped superbly onto the bar deep into stoppage time.
Maddison’s late appeals for a penalty were waved away by VAR, leaving the game to finish 1-1. For Spurs, it’s a point that could end up being vital in their survival push.
