| Fulham beat Newcastle in season finale at Craven Cottage |
Fulham signed off with a 2-0 home win against Newcastle. The result marked just their third win in 13 games and capped a disappointing end for both clubs.
Fulham beat Newcastle 2-0 to finish their Premier League season on a high. Diop and Cairney scored as both sides missed out on a top-half finish...
Fulham finished their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Newcastle at Craven Cottage. It was only their third victory in the last 13 league matches.
Both clubs were chasing a top-half finish. Fulham took the lead just before the halfway point of the first half when Kevin’s 25-yard free-kick hit the crossbar. Issa Diop reacted quickest and headed in the rebound.
Newcastle reacted well after going behind and started to grow into the game through Bruno Guimaraes. He controlled the tempo from midfield and helped his side settle.
William Osula and Jacob Murphy both looked dangerous on the break as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser. Bernd Leno had to make a couple of important saves before half-time to keep Fulham ahead.
The second half felt like a typical end-of-season dead rubber, with little intensity on either side. Both managers made changes to try and lift the pace, but neither team looked fully switched on.
Joe Willock had a shot from distance that summed up the game. The weak effort summed up a contest that lacked spark.

Tom Cairney got the crowd on their feet with a strike from 20 yards. He lashed a powerful shot into the top-left corner to double Fulham’s lead.
The goals in each half were enough for Fulham to close out their season with a win.
It had been a promising campaign at one stage, with European qualification still possible. It ended on a quiet note.
Attention now turns to the dugouts. The question is whether Marco Silva will stay in charge at Fulham. On Tyneside, Eddie Howe will be glad the season is over as Newcastle look to reset and regroup before next Premier League season.
