Newcastle double up West Ham to push Hammers closer to championship drop...

West Ham United are close to Premier League relegation following a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United. The win gave the Magpies back-to-back home victories for the first time since early January.

The first half was tight until VAR reviewed a possible handball by Tomas Soucek in the box. The review went West Ham’s way this time, unlike their controversial call against Arsenal in the previous match.

Even after surviving that check, West Ham fell behind before the 15th minute. Nick Woltemade finished a Harvey Barnes cross for his first goal since before Christmas.

Five minutes later it got worse for the visitors. Newcastle carved through West Ham’s defense, and William Osula capped the move to make it 2-0.

Nuno Espirito Santo responded by abandoning the back three and bringing on Taty Castellanos to partner Callum Wilson up front. The Argentine striker quickly forced Nick Pope into a save.

West Ham looked better after the break but still went into halftime down by two and struggled to create chances in the second half. Frustrations boiled over, and Souček again escaped a VAR review after appearing to kick out at an opponent.

The reprieve didn’t last long. Another cheap giveaway sent Osula through for his second goal of the match.

Needing a spark, West Ham found one through Castellanos. The forward latched onto a long ball from goalkeeper Mads Hermansen and looped a first-time volley over Nick Pope from outside the box to give the visitors a sliver of hope.

Jarrod Bowen, usually the team’s talisman, had a chance to make it 3-2 but was denied by Pope. Castellanos then hit the woodwork with a driven shot. Newcastle have conceded more late goals than any other side this season, but they held firm to hand West Ham another damaging defeat.

Tottenham Hotspur can send West Ham down to the Championship with a win at Chelsea on Tuesday. Even a draw would likely be enough for the Hammers to go down, given Tottenham’s far superior goal difference.

If West Ham are relegated, they will finish with the highest points total for a relegated side in 10 years. The last team to go down with more was Newcastle, who dropped with 37 points in 2015-16.

Eddie Howe’s side extended their unbeaten run to three games with the win. Still, they need an unlikely set of results on the final day to climb back into the European spots.
