Arsenal took another step toward a first Premier League title in 22 years with a 1-0 win over already-relegated Burnley. The result puts the pressure on Manchester City ahead of their penultimate match on Tuesday.
Arsenal knew a win here would put them in a strong position to make history. They responded with patience, building carefully until they found the breakthrough.
Arsenal’s first clear chance came when Leandro Trossard created space for himself and struck a low shot from outside the area that hit the near post. Eberechi Eze then registered the team’s first shot on target with a hooked volley from distance.
Mikel Arteta was furious when Bukayo Saka was denied a penalty after a clash with Lucas Pires. Moments later, Martin Odegaard found space in the area and fired off a shot that was deflected just wide.
Arsenal didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough. From the resulting corner, they scored their 18th goal of the season from set pieces, a Premier League record. Kai Havertz rose above the crowd in the six-yard box and headed into the middle of the net, giving Saka his 50th Premier League assist in the process.
That goal gave Arsenal a good platform heading into half-time. They came out for the second half looking for more, though Eze was unlucky when his shot looped onto the top of the bar after a fingertip save from Max Weiß.
Arsenal still trailed Manchester City on goals scored, so they pushed for a second to move ahead on goal difference in case it mattered on the final day.
Goalscorer Kai Havertz was perhaps a bit overzealous in his challenge on Lesley Ugochukwu, but referee Paul Tierney spared him a red card. Trossard then had a shot that faded wide of the top corner.
The hosts were given plenty of added time to find a second goal, but they were happy to settle for the vital three points.
