Late VAR drama sees Arsenal beat West Ham and push Hammers closer to drop

Leandro Trossard’s deflected goal sealed a 1-0 win for Arsenal at West Ham. VAR ruled out a late West Ham equalizer as Arsenal restored their five-point lead at the top.

Arsenal beat West Ham 1-0 in a tense London derby. The win keeps Mikel Arteta’s side on course for a first Premier League title in 22 years...

Arsenal moved to the brink of the Premier League title with a tense 1-0 win over West Ham, restoring their five-point lead at the top. The defeat pushed West Ham closer to relegation and made them the first team to lose six home London derbies in a single Premier League season.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side might have felt uneasy heading into the game, facing an Arsenal team playing with real urgency as they chase a first league title in 22 years.

Arsenal almost took the lead within the first 10 minutes. Mads Hermansen pushed away Leandro Trossard’s header, and the Belgian’s follow-up shot hit the post.

Konstantinos Mavropanos then made a crucial block to deny Riccardo Calafiori’s glancing header from Declan Rice’s free-kick, keeping the West Ham defence alert.

Things didn’t go entirely smoothly for Mikel Arteta’s side when Ben White went off injured after a challenge with Crysencio Summerville. Martin Zubimendi came on in his place.

With Rice unusually deployed at right-back, West Ham looked to capitalize. Summerville drove forward and had a chance but fired wide.

The hosts finished the half strongly. David Raya produced a good save to keep out Taty Castellanos’ header, after Aaron Wan-Bissaka delivered a pinpoint cross to the Argentine in a lively end to the first period.

Arteta shuffled his lineup again at half-time, bringing on Cristhian Mosquera for Calafiori and moving Rice back into midfield. The changes didn’t stop Arsenal from starting the second half slowly.

The scrappy, disjointed play played into West Ham’s hands. Substitute Pablo nearly gave them a massive boost in their survival fight, but he poked El Hadji Malick Diouf’s cross wide.

Espirito Santo’s side had an even clearer chance moments later. Raya made a brilliant point-blank save to deny Mateus Fernandes, and for a moment Arsenal’s title hopes looked in serious danger.

That save turned out to be pivotal. Trossard scored his first goal of 2026 with a close-range effort that took a deflection off Martin Ødegaard’s cut-back. The goal kept Arsenal’s title charge alive and pushed West Ham closer to relegation.

There was one last twist in store. Callum Wilson found the net in stoppage time to give West Ham a potentially vital goal, but it was ruled out after Pablo was penalized for a foul on Raya. Arsenal held firm to take all three points.

The disallowed goal was a huge setback for the Hammers. They’re still a point behind Tottenham in the relegation fight, and they’ve played a game more than their rivals.

For Arsenal, the win capped off an excellent week. Their hopes of securing both the Premier League and Champions League this season remain very much alive.
