Gauff maintains Roland Garros quarter-final streak hopes with win over Sherif

The American fourth seed overcame a scrappy serving display to beat Sherif 6-3, 6-2 and extend her run of reaching at least the last eight in Paris.

Defending champion Coco Gauff broke serve seven times to defeat Mayar Sherif on Court Suzanne Lenglen and reach round three at Roland Garros...

Coco Gauff’s French Open title defence stayed on track after she beat Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif in straight sets in Thursday’s second-round match.

The American fourth seed proved too strong for world No. 129 Sherif on Court Suzanne Lenglen, sealing a 6-3, 6-2 win.

“It was a physical match, a tough match, my patience was really tested today,” said Gauff after the win.

The 22-year-old has made at least the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for five straight years. While she wasn’t at her sharpest against Sherif, she always looked in control and never looked likely to lose.

“No expectations,” she insisted when asked if winning the title last year raised her hopes this time around. “I'm just having fun.” The American said she was focused on enjoying the moment rather than feeling extra pressure as defending champion.

Gauff broke Sherif seven times during the contest, with both players finding it hard to hold serve. She closed out the victory in 1 hour and 50 minutes.

For Sherif, the wait for a first Grand Slam third-round appearance goes on. The Egyptian qualifier fell in the second round in Paris for the fourth time in five years.
