Manchester City confirmed that Antoine Semenyo was racially abused during Monday’s 3-3 draw with Everton, while teammate Marc Guehi was also targeted with racist messages online after the match, the club said in a statement on Tuesday.
Merseyside Police have arrested a 71-year-old man on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, Everton said in a separate statement, following reports from supporters and stewards about abuse directed at an away player.
“He has since been bailed with conditions, including restrictions preventing him from going within one mile of any designated sports stadium for a period of up to four hours before kick-off, during matches and up to four hours after the final whistle,” Everton said.
City praised Everton and police for acting quickly to identify a suspect, while also speaking out against the racist abuse Guehi faced on social media.

On the field, Guehi had a difficult moment when a loose pass back to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma let Everton’s Thierno Barry pounce and equalise in the second half.
“We are also incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guehi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts last night,” City said.
“We will continue to offer our full support to both Antoine and Marc and never accept discrimination of any kind in our game.”
The result leaves City five points behind league leaders Arsenal, though Pep Guardiola’s side still have a match in hand.
