Michael Olise’s brilliant goal gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg and meant Harry Kane’s missed penalty didn’t matter. The result leaves Wolfsburg just above the automatic relegation spots on goal difference.

‎Bayern had already clinched the Bundesliga title and had little riding on the game, their first since losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-final.

Despite having nothing left to play for, Bayern didn’t ease off in a fast-paced first half at Wolfsburg’s ground. The relegation-threatened hosts nearly went ahead early when Vinícius Souza forced Jonas Urbig into a point-blank save.

At the other end, Kamil Grabara was quickly tested, denying Jamal Musiala at the near post. Moments later he watched Tom Bischof’s effort strike the frame of the goal.

Kamil Grabara let out a huge sigh of relief in the 36th minute when Harry Kane skied his penalty. Olise had been fouled in the box, but Kane slipped on his standing leg and missed, much to the home fans’ delight.

Wolfsburg tried to make the most of Kane’s rare penalty miss, but Jonas Urbig came up big with two sharp saves to deny Denis Vavro’s powerful strike and Christian Eriksen’s follow-up.

Bayern went into halftime frustrated at 0-0, but their mood lifted just before the hour when Olise produced a moment of class to break the deadlock. Using a couple of step-overs, he cut inside from the right and curled an unstoppable shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

Wolfsburg lost their first-half attacking edge until Mattias Svanberg broke through late on. His low shot beat the goalkeeper but hit the post, leaving the home fans deflated.

The narrow defeat leaves Dieter Hecking’s side in the relegation play-off place, level on points with 17th-placed St. Pauli. The two teams now meet in a decisive clash on the final day.
