Borussia Monchengladbach 1-0 Dortmund — Late Strike Confirms Bundesliga Safety

Haris Tabakovic scored in the 90th minute to give Gladbach a 1-0 win over Dortmund. The victory moved Gladbach nine points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

Borussia Monchengladbach secured their Bundesliga status with a stoppage-time winner, beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 at home to move nine points clear of the relegation play-off spot.

Dortmund’s delayed arrival pushed kick-off back by 10 minutes, but the start was slow to ignite. A blocked Kevin Stoger effort was the only shot of note in the opening stages.

The first shot on target arrived in the 20th minute, with Joe Scally lashing a clean strike from the edge of the box that Gregor Kobel saved comfortably. Five minutes later Kobel was beaten by a sharp Nico Elvedi volley from a free-kick, but the offside flag went up instantly.

With survival still not certain, Gladbach kept pushing forward. They couldn’t find a way through though, as Haris Tabakovic saw a close-range effort denied by Kobel following more good build-up from Scally.

The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock just before half-time when Franck Honorat’s corner was headed narrowly wide by Yannik Engelhardt. Dortmund finally tested Moritz Nicolas with the last kick of the half, but Samuele Inacio’s tame effort summed up their lack of attacking threat.

Gladbach picked up where they left off after the break, with Tabakovic blazing wide from six yards under pressure and Stöger firing straight at Kobel from a promising spot. Julian Brandt did carve out a half-chance though, hinting Dortmund might improve in the second half.

It was only midway through the half that Dortmund managed another attempt, when Julian Ryerson lashed a wild shot well off target.

Niko Kovac sent on Fabio Silva to change the game, and with 12 minutes left Silva sparked a counter-attack. He couldn’t finish it off though, and the move came to nothing.
