Borussia Dortmund secure UCL qualification with emphatic 4-0 win over Freiburg...

Borussia Dortmund locked in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) place for an 11th season running with a 4-0 victory over Freiburg - their sixth straight Bundesliga home win in this H2H by at least three goals.

With Freiburg’s attention divided ahead of next week’s UEFA Europa League (UEL) semi-final, Dortmund struck early and took just eight minutes to break the deadlock.

Ramy Bensebaini’s ball over the top found Maximilian Beier, who cut in from the left and slotted his finish under Noah Atubolu.

Every Freiburg attempt to respond was shut down, and the hosts doubled their lead when Samuele Inacio surged forward and fed Julian Brandt, whose perfectly lofted cross was turned in by Serhou Guirassy from inside the six-yard box.

Big wins over Freiburg have become a yearly tradition at this ground, and Dortmund kept it going when Julian Ryerson’s corner was headed in at close range by an unmarked Bensebaini.

To their credit, Freiburg improved late in the first half and thought they had pulled one back after the restart, only for Lukas Kubler’s header from Vincenzo Grifo’s cross to be ruled out for a narrow offside.

Content to protect their advantage, the hosts sat back and let Freiburg push for a consolation, but Lucas Holer’s effort that drifted wide was as close as they came.

Freiburg appeared to concede any hope of a dramatic comeback with 10 minutes left, letting Dortmund keep the ball freely and add another.

Daniel Svensson collected the ball on the right side of the box and whipped it into a packed area, where fellow substitute Fabio Silva turned and slotted a composed finish into the bottom-right corner.

Dortmund haven’t missed out on UCL qualification since Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge, and they could secure a sixth runners-up finish in that span next weekend.

Meanwhile, Freiburg’s European hopes took a hit with this defeat, but they could still join Dortmund in Europe’s top competition if they go on to win the UEL.
