World No. 104 Matteo Arnaldi ended Griekspoor’s bid for a fourth straight second-round appearance at Roland Garros with a four-set win.
After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Arnaldi took control and will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas in round two...
Matteo Arnaldi advanced to the second round of the French Open after defeating Tallon Griekspoor 6-7 (9), 6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-3 in Paris.
Griekspoor faced world No. 104 Matteo Arnaldi in the opening round. The Dutch player was aiming to reach the second round at Roland Garros for the fourth consecutive year.
The match began with both players holding serve throughout the set. Griekspoor saved two break points in the eighth game. In the tiebreak, Arnaldi earned three set points after winning two straight minibreaks. Griekspoor responded by saving them and won the set 11-9 after a tiebreak that included seven consecutive minibreaks.
The second set proved tougher for Griekspoor. He led 40-15 midway through and looked in control, but lost the game and gave Arnaldi a break. From there Griekspoor’s play unraveled. He couldn’t steady himself for the rest of the set and dropped it to Arnaldi, leaving the match tied at one set each after two hours.
Arnaldi, who had fallen out of the top 100 following months of injury issues, kept applying pressure and made life difficult for Griekspoor. After saving three game points to hold from 40-0 down on his own serve, Arnaldi reached set point twice. Griekspoor saved both, forcing another tiebreak.
Arnaldi rallies to take third set after Griekspoor squanders lead
Griekspoor started the tiebreak strongy and quickly gained control. A well-executed drop shot at the net gave him four set points, but he failed to convert any of them and let the set slip back into contention. With Arnaldi back on serve, Griekspoor committed an error to hand him set point. The Italian closed it out with a clean passing shot, taking six straight points to win the tiebreak.

Griekspoor fell behind early in the fourth set when Arnaldi broke him in the second service game and stayed in front. The Italian held serve throughout the set without losing a point and clinched the match on his first match point, which came right after his second break of the set.
Griekspoor’s run ended in the first round in Paris. Arnaldi will play Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.
