Vincent Kompany backs 'Musiala magic' to return soon for Bayern

Vincent Kompany says Jamal Musiala will soon hit a new level after returning from a broken leg. Bayern face Leverkusen in Cup semi Wednesday.

With Bundesliga won, Bayern target Cup final. Kompany wants Musiala to lead vs Leverkusen Wednesday. 9 scorer points since return...

Bayern Munich playmaker Jamal Musiala missed most of the season with a broken leg. He’s already made an impact since returning in January, but coach Vincent Kompany believes he’ll soon reach another level.

The 23-year-old Germany international suffered a fractured fibula and a broken, dislocated ankle after colliding with then-Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Club World Cup last July.

Since returning at the start of the year, he’s steadily earned more minutes as he pushes to make Germany’s World Cup squad before the tournament starts in June.

Fellow Bayern midfielder Serge Gnabry carried much of the load while Musiala was out, but he’ll miss several weeks with an adductor muscle injury.

With Bayern facing Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup semi-final on Wednesday, Kompany needs Musiala to step up.

“Jamal is in a good phase at the moment,” he told a press conference on Tuesday.

“I said it early on, back in January, that he's developed physically. He's now also physically close to his best level, not just in terms of strength but also in terms of ‌his willingness to run.”

“Now the question is when will 'Magic Musiala' return? It will come 100%. The moments are there. But even now, what the lad is doing at the moment is very dangerous in front of goal.”

In 600 minutes of play, Musiala has tallied nine 'scorer points' across all competitions - the combined total of goals and assists - Kompany said.

Treble-chasing Bayern, who haven’t reached the German Cup final since 2020, clinched the Bundesliga title Sunday with a 4-2 win over VfB Stuttgart and four games to spare.

They also play PSG next week in France for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

“When he has this total freedom again, and it will come back, then you will have an even more developed version of Musiala and that, as a coach, makes me happy,” Kompany added.

“But with nine scorer points in 600 minutes ‌he has shown he is ready.”
