Athletic Club recorded their first clean sheet in eight home games at San Mames, edging Osasuna 1-0 to move within a point of LaLiga’s top seven.

Athletic were still in the European race before kickoff, but four defeats in five LaLiga games had hurt their chances. Osasuna, also chasing Europe, had just one win in six and were second-best for the entire first half.

Los Leones weren’t at their best either, but after a fourth-minute penalty for Lucas Torro’s handball was overturned, they took the lead around the 15-minute mark.

Nico Williams forced a save from Sergio Herrera and Gorka Guruzeta fired in the rebound.

Chances were scarce before halftime, but Alex Berenguer nearly doubled the lead with a low drive from inside the box just before the break.

The halftime break gave Osasuna head coach Alessio Lisci a chance to address his players, and his words seemed to spark a reaction.

Ante Budimir had Osasuna’s best chance so far within five minutes of the restart, sending an overhead kick just wide of the post.

Minutes later, Osasuna won a penalty when Yeray Alvarez handled Flavien Boyomo’s flick toward goal. This time VAR didn’t intervene, but Budimir couldn’t convert from the spot. Unai Simon saved the weak effort and gathered the rebound on the second attempt.

Osasuna offered little threat in the final third overall, though Simon still had to make a big save to tip Budimir’s header onto the post and preserve Athletic’s lead.

Osasuna couldn’t find a late equalizer despite Athletic’s Mikel Jauregizar being sent off at the start of eight minutes of stoppage time. Los Rojillos’ poor run continues and the defeat drops them below Athletic into 10th, denting their European hopes.

Athletic will now believe they can clinch a European place, though a tough trip to Atlético Madrid awaits next.
