LaLiga: Getafe 0-2 Barcelona - Catalans Close in on LaLiga Crown

Getafe Vs Barcelona
Lopez, Rashford score as Barcelona edge closer to LaLiga title with Getafe win

Barcelona beat Getafe 2-0 thanks to goals from Fermin Lopez and Marcus Rashford. The result leaves Getafe at risk of dropping out of the European places this weekend.

Goals from Fermin Lopez and Marcus Rashford gave Barcelona a win at Getafe...

Barcelona moved closer to the LaLiga title with a hard-fought 2-0 win at the Estadio Coliseum against a Getafe team that had won seven of its last 10 matches.

Robert Lewandowski had the game’s first chance, but his powerful header sailed just over as Barca tried to break down Getafe’s ultra-defensive back five.

Dani Olmo then missed a chance to slip in the Polish striker on Barca’s next threat. Though the visitors played the better football, Getafe’s physical approach caused problems, with Mauro Arambarri going close twice.

Joao Cancelo was a constant threat down Barca’s right. Just before the half-hour mark his pass found Olmo, but the forward’s delivery was easily cleared.

Roony Bardghji fired a rocket toward goal late in the half, but it whistled past the post. Getafe broke immediately after and had a two-on-one, but Davinchi overhit his cross.

In stoppage time, Fermin Lopez showed his value to the Blaugrana again, placing the ball beyond David Soria to give the visitors a crucial lead at the break.

Getafe started the second half with more intent. For the first 10 minutes they flew into tackles to try to unsettle the league leaders.

Olmo came closest to doubling Hansi Flick’s side lead, but Soria got both hands to the forward’s curling right-foot shot. Jules Kounde then sent a glancing header just wide of the post.

With just over 20 minutes left, the hosts needed far more of the ball than the 20.3% possession they’d managed if they wanted a way back into the game.

Olmo missed the target again from a good position. Then Marcus Rashford had the freedom of the Coliseum to make it 2-0, finishing a break after Getafe’s entire outfield was caught upfield.

That goal sealed a result that puts the Catalans 11 points clear at the top with five games left. They could clinch the league title with wins over Osasuna and Real Madrid in their next two matches.

Getafe, meanwhile, risk slipping out of the European places if other results go against them this weekend.
