Leipzig cruise past Union to tighten hold on Champions League spots. Max Finkgrafe, Romulo Cardoso, and Ridle Baku scored as RB Leipzig eased past Union Berlin 3-1...
RB Leipzig stretched their home unbeaten run to six matches (W4, D2) with a comfortable 3-1 win over Union Berlin at the Red Bull Arena, a result that all but locks up a top-four Bundesliga finish and a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Leipzig started fast. Antonio Nusa broke into the box but saw his low shot saved by Frederik Ronnow.
The Union keeper was tested again moments later. A ball into the box found Rômulo Cardoso, whose first effort was well stopped before András Schafer tracked back to head the goalbound rebound behind.
Die Roten Bullen kept up the pressure and were rewarded midway through the first half.
Yan Diomande’s cross from the byline was pushed out by Ronnow. Leopold Querfeld headed the clearance away, but only to Max Finkgräfe, who fired a first-time left-footed shot into the right side of the net.

It got worse for the visitors three minutes later. A ball over the top sent Cardoso clear. He rounded Ronnow and rolled it into an empty net.
Willi Orban’s header hit the crossbar soon after, and Christoph Baumgartner’s header was brilliantly saved moments later to keep the deficit at two going into halftime.
Union are unlikely to be dragged into a relegation fight, but their fans will want safety confirmed sooner rather than later.
That cause wasn’t helped here. Leipzig made it three just after the hour mark when a smart pass inside the box found Ridle Baku. He worked free and slotted his shot past Ronnow’s outstretched right leg.
Union finally registered a shot on target in the 78th minute and scored from it. Danilho Doekhi’s powerful header from a corner beat Maarten Vandevoordt. It meant little, though. Leipzig regained control to see out a commanding win, after a late Ilyas Ansah consolation was ruled out for offside.
The result puts Leipzig eight points clear of nearest top-four challengers TSG Hoffenheim with 12 points left to play for. That leaves them on the verge of a seventh top-four finish in the last eight seasons.
