United can clinch Champions League qualification vs Liverpool next weekend...

Manchester United moved within touching distance of a UEFA Champions League spot next season with an entertaining 2-1 win over Brentford, the Bees’ fifth straight Premier League defeat at Old Trafford.

There was nearly an early goal-of-the-season contender inside two minutes, when Kobbie Mainoo weaved through a crowd of Brentford players before finding Amad Diallo with the goal seemingly at his mercy.

It deserved a goal, but the Ivorian was denied by a smart block on the line from Sepp van den Berg.

Moments later, it was Caoimhin Kelleher’s turn for heroics, with goal-line technology confirming he had clawed away Harry Maguire’s header just in time.

But it was an ominous start for Keith Andrews’ team.

Casemiro broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Maguire turned provider this time, nodding Bruno Fernandes’ cross back across the box to the Brazilian, who headed in his ninth Premier League goal of the season to extend his best-ever scoring campaign.

Another in-form scorer, Igor Thiago, had a chance for a quick response but somehow missed his kick at the far post under pressure from Luke Shaw.

Thiago had two more big chances before half-time, and Senne Lammens also had to be sharp to stop an Ayden Heaven own goal.

In an open game, only the offside flag denied Amad at the other end before Benjamin Sesko grabbed United’s second on the brink of half-time. He finished off another Fernandes assist, sitting a defender down and curling past Kelleher.

The Portugal star kept pulling the strings in the second half, knowing one more assist would see him match the single-season Premier League record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

But it was the London side pushing hardest, with Thiago miscuing another chance and relying on the offside flag to spare his blushes.

Dango Ouattara then could only hit the woodwork from close range, before Maguire bravely blocked his acrobatic attempt on the rebound.

The game looked to be drifting, but Mathias Jensen made it interesting when he drilled a great strike into the corner from the edge of the box in the 87th minute for a career-high fifth goal against the Red Devils.

That set up a nervy finish for the hosts, but they held on for a vital win.

United have now scored in 22 straight Premier League games and have the chance to seal Champions League qualification with a win against Liverpool at Old Trafford next weekend, if other results don’t confirm it first.

Brentford’s winless run stretches back to February, though they remain just two points off sixth, with a first-ever European qualification still possible.
