EPL: Bournemouth Leave It Late to Beat Newcastle and Extend Unbeaten Run

Cherries climb to eighth after late win at St James’ park

Newcastle’s struggles continued with a 2-1 home loss to Bournemouth, as Truffert’s 85th-minute strike piled pressure on Eddie Howe.

Truffert the hero as Bournemouth leave it late to snatch win at Newcastle...

Outgoing Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola began his farewell tour with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Newcastle United, stretching the Premier League’s current longest unbeaten run to 13 games (W6, D7).

With Newcastle’s top scorer Anthony Gordon out injured, Harvey Barnes dragged an early effort narrowly wide as the Magpies made a bright start.

The visitors soon grew into the game, unsettling Eddie Howe’s side with a high press that eventually led to the opener on 32 minutes.

After going seven PL games without a goal contribution following three in his first three for Bournemouth, Rayan provided the assist with a direct run past Lewis Hall before pulling it back for Marcus Tavernier to tap in.

Neat interplay almost brought a second soon after, when Alex Scott cut it back for Evanilson, but he couldn’t get proper contact on what would have been a certain goal.

The Toon Army made their frustrations clear straight away, and despite going close to an equaliser when Dorde Petrovic had to push away Scott’s inadvertent touch toward his own goal, a chorus of home boos greeted the half-time whistle.

With the pressure mounting on Howe, Newcastle had to respond and the manager turned to Kieran Trippier off the bench.

A competitive spell at the start of the second half produced no goals, but the return of captain Bruno Guimaraes after two months out injured lifted the mood at St James’ Park just after the hour.

That lifted the crowd and the equaliser arrived six minutes later, when William Osula survived a VAR check for offside. He profited from a vital touch by Evanilson, who unintentionally played him beyond the Bournemouth backline, and the striker held off Marcos Senesi before slotting home.

That set up an intriguing finale and, to the home fans’ dismay, Bournemouth struck with five minutes left. Tavernier lofted a ball up for Evanilson, who nodded it down under pressure, allowing Adrien Truffert to turn in his first goal for the club from close range.

That sucker punch ultimately condemned the Magpies to a fifth defeat in their last six home league games, with just one win from their last seven in all competitions (D1, L5).

Sitting 14th, a European push now looks unlikely, while Bournemouth’s hopes received a significant boost as they climbed to eighth after a club-record eighth straight away league game unbeaten (W4, D4).
