Lorient back to winning ways in Ligue 1 after dispatching Marseille...
Mid-table Lorient confirmed their Ligue 1 status for next season with a 2-0 win over Olympique de Marseille, who could slip out of the European places if weekend results go against them.
Les Merlus entered the match winless in three (D2, L1), but they nearly went ahead early when Panos Katseris was slipped in over the top and forced a save from Geronimo Rulli. Moments later, L’OM had their best opening of the half as a looping header dropped to Mason Greenwood, only for Yvon Mvogo to deny him and keep the striker one goal off the lead in the golden boot race.
Lorient looked the livelier side in front of their home fans and went ahead midway through the half when Bamba Dieng brought down a long ball before it deflected into the path of Katseris, who made no mistake to fire past Rulli.
Marseille began the second half on the front foot, with substitute Timothy Weah, Himad Abdelli, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all getting shots away inside the first 10 minutes.
None of them could breach the Lorient back line though, with Mvogo again proving decisive. L’OM were made to pay soon after when Pablo Pagis slid a clever pass through to Bamba Dieng, who lifted a finish over Rulli to double the hosts’ lead.
That was Dieng’s ninth league goal of the season for the former Marseille man, taking him past his career total with his old club.

Pagis nearly added one himself later on but was denied by Rulli, as none of the visitors’ substitutes could change the outcome. Marseille ultimately slumped to a third defeat in four and their 10th of the league season.
The result extended their poor away run, now four losses in their last five on the road from the Stade Velodrome. For Lorient, it’s 14 home league games unbeaten (W8, D6), keeping them ninth in the table.
