Denmark’s Elmer Moller has booked his place in the main draw of the Madrid Open.
With his 7-6, 6-3 qualifying win over Spain’s Pablo Llamas Ruiz, Moller reaches the Masters 1000 event for the second straight year.
He opened qualifying Monday with a straight-sets win over world No. 115 Hugo Gaston of France.
Ranked No. 169 in the world, Moller is most comfortable on clay and has a history of beating higher-ranked opponents. He did it again Tuesday in Madrid qualifying.
Moller faced break points in three service games in the opening set. The Dane saved all six while trailing 0-1, 1-2, and 2-3.
Moller steadied his game to force a first-set tiebreak at 6-6. He raced ahead 4-0 and 5-1 before Llamas Ruiz saved a set point to cut it to 6-4.
Moller closed out the opening set and carried the momentum into the second.
The Dane broke for a 4-2 lead and, after missing three match points on Llamas Ruiz’s serve, served out the match himself.
Moller also qualified for the Madrid main draw last year. On his Masters 1000 debut, he fell in the first round to Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca.
