Arsenal grind out 0-0 draw against Sporting to reach Champions League semi-finals...
Arsenal scraped into the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-finals with an unconvincing 0-0 draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, advancing 1-0 on aggregate. The Gunners are in the last four for the second season in a row.
The hosts were desperate for a big display after three straight domestic defeats, especially with a crucial trip to Premier League title rivals Manchester City set for Sunday.
They started brightly, but the intensity dipped as Sporting grew into the game. Francisco Trincao had the first real opening after 18 minutes when he fired well wide from just inside the box.

Pedro Goncalves blazed over from a tight angle on the half-hour mark with the visitors looking comfortable, and the Emirates crowd got edgier as half-time neared.
Geny Catamo sent a warning two minutes before the break when he met Maximiliano Araujo’s cross on the volley, only for the ball to clip the outside of the far post with David Raya beaten.
Eberechi Eze then sent an effort over the bar from 20 yards in the last action of a first half where Arsenal failed to force Rui Silva into a serious save.
Sporting had scored 14 of their 20 UCL goals this season after half-time, and they nearly added another when Araujo flashed a shot wide three minutes after the restart.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta reacted by swapping former Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres for first-leg goalscorer Kai Havertz. His side nearly led straight away as Noni Madueke burst into the box, but the winger was off balance and fired into the side netting.
The tension only grew as Arsenal struggled to find the goal to seal the tie, and Arteta was booked for protesting a decision midway through the half.
The Gunners had little room for error but finished strongly as Sporting faded. Leandro Trossard met Max Dowman’s corner with a header that struck the post.

A UCL-high eighth clean sheet gives Arsenal a solid platform for their semi-final against Atlético Madrid. They have now lost just one of their last 24 European games at the Emirates (W17, D6).
Meanwhile, Sporting’s wait for a first semi-final in this competition goes on. Their winless run in European away games against English sides now stands at 11 (D6, L5).
