England names squad for Uruguay and Japan, fringe players look to impress for World Cup spot...
Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Harry Maguire have made it into England's squad for the upcoming friendlies, but Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ollie Watkins are left out. Calvert-Lewin has been on fire for Leeds with 10 PL goals this season.
Kobbie Mainoo's impressive form with Manchester United under Michael Carrick has earned him a spot in the 35-man squad. England will be looking strong for their upcoming matches.
The striker's last England appearance was 5 years ago, in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals. Mainoo, on the other hand, hasn't been selected since September 2024, making his inclusion a surprise.
Thomas Tuchel who recently extended his England contract is giving several surprise call-ups a chance, with this squad likely being his last look at potential players before finalizing the 2026 World Cup squad. Brighton's Jason Steele is also in, likely to serve as the Three Lions' training goalkeeper this summer.
Tuchel's squad also features Everton's James Garner, Newcastle's Lewis Hall, Man Utd's Harry Maguire, AC Milan's Fikayo Tomori, and Spurs' Dominic Solanke, adding depth to the England lineup.
Big hitters like Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, and Jordan Pickford are back, giving Tuchel a strong core to work with as he eyes the 2026 World Cup.
Squad Shake-Up
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ollie Watkins didn't make the cut, and Reece James is out injured. England's 35-man squad features surprises like Calvert-Lewin and Mainoo as Tuchel eyes the 2026 World Cup.
The squad takes on Uruguay on March 27th and Japan on March 31st, giving Tuchel's team plenty to play for in these friendlies.
"We decided to divide it into basically two camps, almost, so we bring players in that we haven’t seen who haven’t played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US,” Tuchel explained.
“Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp - 10 or 11 players who get a rest before, and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan.”

England's qualifying campaign was flawless - they won every match without conceding a goal. Now, the March international break is a chance for fringe players to push their case for a World Cup spot.
Those on the periphery, like Calvert-Lewin and Mainoo, can use these friendlies to impress Tuchel ahead of the big tournament this summer.
