Paulo Dybala sidelined with knee injury

Roma's Paulo Dybala out for 6 weeks with knee injury, misses 7 Serie A games and Europa League clash vs Bologna.

Dybala's been struggling with knee issues, missing February entirely with a “knee problem...”

Roma's hopes of securing a top-four spot in Serie A have been dealt a significant blow with Paulo Dybala's six-week absence due to a knee injury. The Argentine striker underwent surgery in Rome on Friday for a “complete longitudinal tear of the external meniscus.”

Dybala's injury means he'll miss seven Italian league matches and the Europa League round of 16 tie against Bologna. This is a tough break for Roma, who are currently fourth in Serie A, 16 points behind leaders Inter Milan. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini will need to rely on other attacking options like Andrea Belotti and Paulo José Mestre to fill the void left by Dybala.

The 2022 World Cup winner had to cut short Thursday's training session due to muscle fatigue, according to Roma's initial description. He's expected to be out for 45 days, missing seven Italian league matches and the Europa League round of 16 tie against Bologna.

Dybala's been struggling with knee issues, missing February entirely with a “knee problem.” He made a partial return, sitting on the bench against Juventus on March 1, but didn't get off the subs bench in the 3-3 draw.

Dybala, 32, had been struggling for form and lost his starting spot at Roma late last season. This season, he's managed just two goals in 17 Serie A games.

Roma's in a tricky spot, fourth in Serie A, 16 points behind Inter Milan. But they're only two points behind Napoli in third and three ahead of Como in fifth.
