De Zerbi's herculean task at Spurs

Roberto De Zerbi appointed as Tottenham manager with Premier League survival top priority, as Spurs struggle one point above relegation zone with seven games left.

“I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it...”

Tottenham Hotspur have officially appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager on a five-year deal, amidst their fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League. De Zerbi, who left Marseille by mutual consent in February, is set to become the third-highest-paid manager in the Premier League, with a lucrative contract that includes a significant survival bonus if he guides Spurs to safety.

The Italian tactician is expected to take charge immediately, with his first game likely to be against Sunderland on April 12. De Zerbi's appointment marks the club's third managerial change this season, following the departures of Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, who lasted just 44 days in the role.

The north London team is currently in a tricky spot, sitting just one point above the relegation zone with seven matches left. To make matters worse, they haven't secured a league win in 2026.

“I am delighted to be joining this fantastic football club, which is one of the biggest and most prestigious in the world,” De Zerbi said.

“In all my discussions with the Club’s leadership, their ambition for the future has been clear – to build a team capable of reaching great achievements, and to do that playing a style of football that excites and inspires our supporters.

“I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give everything to deliver it.

“Our short-term priority is to climb the Premier League table, which will be the complete focus until the final whistle of the last game of the season. I’m looking forward to getting out on the training pitch and working with these players to achieve that.”

Roberto De Zerbi made a name for himself in England during his two-year tenure as Brighton manager from 2022 to 2024. He led the Seagulls to their maiden European campaign and an FA Cup semi-final appearance in 2023.

De Zerbi's Brighton tenure was marked by attractive football and notable victories, earning him recognition in the Premier League.

De Zerbi's stint at Marseille was short but sweet, with a second-place Ligue 1 finish in his first full season. Now, he's back in England, signing a long-term deal with Tottenham.

Spurs are desperate to avoid relegation, having not been out of the top flight since 1977-78. De Zerbi's task is clear.

Tottenham has all the ingredients for success: a massive new stadium, top-notch training facilities, and revenues that rank among the top 10 clubs globally. Yet, they're staring down the barrel of relegation to the Championship.

Just a few years ago, Spurs were Champions League regulars under Mauricio Pochettino, even reaching the final in 2019. The contrast is stark.

Tottenham ended their 17-year trophy drought under Ange Postecoglou's management, winning the Europa League last season. However, Postecoglou was sacked shortly after, following a disappointing 17th-place finish in the Premier League.

The signs of trouble were there when Ange Postecoglou was let go despite winning the Europa League, with Spurs finishing 17th in the Premier League. Thomas Frank was brought in but lasted just 17 games, winning only twice in that league stretch.

Igor Tudor took over briefly but didn't fare much better. Now, De Zerbi's got the challenge of steering the ship to safety.
