Ghana parts ways with Otto Addo
Ghana's football governing body. GFA looks to appoint a new head coach quickly, with Desmond Ofei and Kwesi Appiah top contenders, as World Cup looms. Addo's second stint as Black Stars coach ends after 22 matches, with just eight wins and a 36.4% win rate.
GFA, sacks coach Otto Addo after a string of poor results, including a 5-1 loss to Austria and a 2-1 defeat to Germany...
Ghana's football governing body, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has parted ways with head coach Otto Addo, citing a string of disappointing results, including a 2-1 defeat to Germany and 5-1 loss to Austria. This decision comes just over two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Early frontrunners to replace Addo include assistant coach Desmond Ofei and former coach Kwesi Appiah, who currently leads Sudan's national team. Appiah is seen as a strong candidate, given his experience and familiarity with the players.
The decision to let Addo go came out of the blue, but it was probably due after Ghana's latest stumble. GFA officials and Sports Minister Kofi Adams rushed to Stuttgart for an emergency meeting, and it ended with Addo getting the boot.
This is Addo's second exit from the role, and it's a messier exit than last time.
Ghana's loss to Austria in Vienna on March 27th was a massive blow, marking their heaviest defeat in 19 years and sparking concerns about the team's readiness for the World Cup. This defeat, coupled with their subsequent loss to Germany, ultimately led to the sacking of coach Otto Addo.
The loss to Germany, especially that late Undav goal, was brutal. It wasn't just the result; people were shook by how the team played. Ghana's bigwigs had had enough.
Ghana's four consecutive losses have dashed hopes of a confident World Cup campaign, replacing anticipation with anxiety and uncertainty. The Black Stars' struggles, including a 5-1 thrashing by Austria and a 2-1 loss to Germany, led to coach Otto Addo's dismissal.
Potential replacements include Kwesi Appiah, who previously led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup, and Desmond Ofei, currently an assistant coach. The Ghana Football Association aims to appoint a new coach quickly, given the World Cup's proximity.
Addo's calm and collected responses at press conferences didn't quite cut it. Sources say they lacked the authority and conviction people were looking for, especially given Ghana's struggles.
The reports of Addo losing the dressing room likely sealed his fate. If players aren't buying into the coach's vision, it's a recipe for disaster. The GFA probably couldn't ignore the lack of trust between Addo and the team.
The GFA and Sports Minister Adams had a long night, and by dawn, Addo's fate was sealed. His second stint as Ghana's head coach was done.
A Stint Marked by Unfulfilled Promise
Addo's second spell as Black Stars coach had potential, but results and performances didn't quite follow. Despite goodwill and support, he struggled to impose a clear identity on the team.
A Lacklustre Record
Across 22 matches in his second stint, the numbers tell a difficult story. Addo won just eight of his 22 games, drawing five and losing nine.
His side scored 35 goals but conceded 28, and his overall win rate of 36.4 percent is simply not acceptable for a nation of Ghana's footballing stature, and certainly not for a side on the cusp of a World Cup.
The nine defeats, including the thrashings by Austria and Germany, showed a team lacking direction, confidence, and readiness.
Ghana has a tough road ahead, trying to find a new coach and get them ready for the World Cup in just a few weeks. The 26-man squad is set to be announced in late May, so the new coach has a short time to assess players, implement their strategy, and build team cohesion before facing Panama, England, and Croatia in Group L.
James Kwesi Appiah, current Sudan national team coach, is a top contender for the interim role. He's familiar with the Black Stars and has international experience, having led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup. Other potential candidates include Desmond Ofei, Alain Ravera, and John Paintsil. The Ghana Football Association is considering both interim and long-term options, with the World Cup just around the corner.

The GFA wants to move fast and get someone who's already familiar with the team. They're looking for someone who knows the players and the environment, and can jump straight in without needing time to adjust.
Desmond Ofei, the current assistant coach, is a top contender. He's already part of the setup and knows the squad inside out. Kwesi Appiah, who's currently coaching Sudan, is also in the mix. He's got experience and knows Ghana football.
Kwesi Appiah, who led Ghana to the 2014 World Cup, is also being considered for the job. He's got tournament experience, which could be valuable.
The GFA needs to move quickly, whichever direction they choose. Ghana's World Cup campaign starts June 17th against Panama in Toronto, followed by England in Boston on June 23rd, and Croatia on June 27th.
