Kiel suffers first home defeat in 20 years as Gummersbach wins...
SC Magdeburg, led by coach Bennet Wiegert, secured a comfortable 34-23 (15-11) win against MT Melsungen, solidifying their position as league leaders in the Handball-Bundesliga. With this victory, Magdeburg has maintained a five-point lead over second-placed SG Flensburg-Handewitt after 23 matches, putting them in a strong position to claim their fourth championship title, following previous wins in 2001, 2022, and 2024.
In another match, VfL Gummersbach achieved a significant away win against fourth-placed THW Kiel, defeating them 34-26 (14:15). This marks Kiel's first home defeat in twenty years, with Gummersbach pulling away in the second half to secure the victory. The win keeps Gummersbach in contention for a European League spot.
Gummersbach's win in Kiel is a notable achievement, marking the first time they've won in Kiel in a Bundesliga context since 2006. In fact, it's only the second time Gummersbach has emerged victorious in Kiel this century, highlighting the significance of the result.
Magnus Landin scored two goals for THW Kiel, but it wasn't enough to prevent the home defeat. On the other hand, Gummersbach's Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Kuzmanović put in an impressive performance, making 20 saves to help his team secure the win.
Magdeburg took control of the match midway through the first half, pulling ahead and extending their lead significantly after the break. Their strong performance was spearheaded by backcourt player Felix Claar, who was the top scorer with eleven goals.
The Swedish side will now turn their attention to the Champions League, hosting FC Barcelona on Thursday.
