Thomas Tuchel has thrown a spanner in Harry Maguire's World Cup hopes, suggesting the England defender is his fifth-choice centre-back. This comes after Maguire's first England start in 18 months in the 1-1 draw against Uruguay.
Harry Maguire, who plays for Manchester United, was given the nod by England coach Gareth Southgate, but Thomas Tuchel's comments raise questions about his form. With the World Cup looming, Maguire needs to get minutes and regain his confidence.
Maguire put in a solid performance at Wembley in his first game under Tuchel, but the German coach's comments might've doused some of Maguire's England ambitions. Despite having 65 caps and experience in three major tournaments, Maguire's struggling to get ahead of younger contenders.
Tuchel hinted Maguire's currently behind Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones, and Trevoh Chalobah in his pecking order. This doesn't bode well for Maguire's World Cup chances, especially with Thomas Tuchel's squad announcement looming.
“I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central defender play. That's what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and is the weapon for set-pieces,” Tuchel said.
“I haven't changed my mind, but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile.
“I see Ezri Konsa ahead. I see Marc Guehi ahead. It's no secret. I see Trevor Chalobah on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him.
“Also, John Stones, but he had injuries, so he needed to come to camp.
“I needed to meet him in person to see how he acts within the group. It will be interesting now to see how he acts within the group. He will stay with us.”
Harry Maguire's World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread. Thomas Tuchel, England's coach, has revealed that Maguire is his fifth-choice centre-back, behind Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones, and Trevoh Chalobah. Maguire's only chance to change Tuchel's mind is Tuesday's friendly against Japan at Wembley.
The Three Lions won't play again until their World Cup warm-ups in June, so Tuchel's squad announcement is looming. Maguire needs to impress against Japan to stake his claim for a spot in the 26-man squad heading to the US, Mexico, and Canada.

Asked whether Maguire would be in the squad if it had to be named now, Tuchel said: “If, if, if. We don't need to name the squad tomorrow. He did a good game.
“He did what he does for Man United. He did it straight away. I'm very happy with him. To be honest, I haven't changed my mind. I got everything I expected from him.”
John Stones' absence against Uruguay was due to a calf issue, and he's been struggling to get consistent game time at Manchester City, with just five appearances since November. Despite this, Thomas Tuchel is backing Stones, saying he has “credit in the bank” and calling him “world class.”
Tuchel's support for Stones might give England hope, but Maguire's situation looks tougher.
