Late Uruguay penalty denies England win as experimental lineup struggles in Wembley draw...

England's World Cup prep got off to a shaky start. They drew 1-1 with Uruguay, with the South Americans scoring a late equalizer.

Thomas Tuchel's experimental lineup struggled to gel, and Uruguay's pressure paid off – their only shot on target found the back of the net, ending England's 7-game winning streak.

England dominated possession and tempo before the break, but struggled to create clear chances. Dominic Solanke's effort was easily gathered by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, doing little to trouble the visitors.

The first half saw Uruguay largely contained, but a shocking moment changed the tone: Ronald Araujo's nasty ankle-high challenge on Phil Foden left the England star in agony. The foul, surprisingly unpunished, raised concerns for England's World Cup preparations.

Foden luckily got up and continued, but was quickly subbed off for Cole Palmer. Palmer had been itching to get on the pitch, having missed the autumn internationals due to injury.

He made an immediate impact, whipping in a great cross on 70 minutes that found Dominic Calvert-Lewin unmarked six yards out – but the striker couldn't capitalize, and the chance went begging.

Wembley held its breath, but the Leeds man incredibly guided a header wide when it looked easier to score.

Palmer was involved in England’s opening goal, though, as his inswinging corner caused mayhem in the Uruguay penalty area, and after Muslera initially made a strong save to spare one of his defenders’ blushes, the returning Ben White was on hand to tap home on the line on his first Three Lions appearance in four years.

Weird scenes unfolded as Manuel Ugarte got booked twice but somehow avoided a red card – the second yellow was apparently rescinded.

The referee's questionable calls didn't end there – he awarded Uruguay a late penalty in added time, sparking frustration.

Ironically, it was White who went from hero to zero as it was his foul which was penalised, with Real Madrid man Federico Valverde stepping forward from 12 yards to find the bottom corner and breach England’s defence for the first time since June.
