Chelsea vs Wrexham: Rosenior Warns of Tough FA Cup Tie
Liam Rosenior cautions Chelsea on Wrexham's momentum ahead of Saturday's fifth-round FA Cup match at the Racecourse Ground.
“When you see a club grow, develop, improve and come up through the leagues, it's a great story...”
Liam Rosenior, Chelsea's boss, is keeping his options open when it comes to goalkeepers, stating he has no fixed number one after dropping Robert Sanchez for Filip Jorgensen in the Aston Villa win. Rosenior explained he's looking for competition in every area of the pitch, and Jorgensen's training performances earned him the start.
The decision to drop Sanchez, who struggled against Arsenal, was based on Rosenior's gut feeling, and he's praised Sanchez for handling the situation professionally. With Jorgensen impressing, Rosenior might continue rotating goalkeepers, leaving Sanchez's future uncertain if he remains second choice.
Chelsea's manager Liam Rosenior explained his goalkeeping policy ahead of their FA Cup tie against Wrexham, stating he doesn't believe in having a fixed number one goalkeeper. Instead, he wants competition in every area of the pitch and will pick the best team for each game.
Rosenior's approach involves rotating goalkeepers, as seen in his decision to drop Robert Sanchez for Filip Jorgensen in the Aston Villa match. He praised Jorgensen's performance and emphasized the importance of having a strong squad with the right mentality.
“For me, genuinely, I look at the goalkeeper position maybe differently for each game,” he said. “I want there to be competition in every area of the pitch.
“I know traditionally if there's a change of goalkeeper it's like 'He's now the number one'. It's not the case, it's not the case at all.
“So we will try and pick the best team possible for each game.”
Rosenior praised Robert Sanchez for handling being dropped well, saying the Spanish keeper's response was good.
“You need continuity, but you need to win games of football,” he said. “There's different ways, modern coaching or old school or anything.
“I will pick the team I think is best to win each game. I don't think I've kept the same 11 in any game that we've played.
"Now, people can say we need continuity, and if we lose then we don't have enough continuity. If we win then it's the right decision.”
Rosenior dismissed concerns that rotating goalkeepers could disrupt rhythm and confidence, implying he's focused on picking the best player for each match.
“I've spoken about (winger Alejandro) Garnacho and the way he's responded to not being in the team,” he said.
"If we're going to be successful, I'm sure in the short and long term you need a group, you need a squad with the right mentality and Rob so far has been absolutely magnificent in that.”
Rosenior's warning: Wrexham's got momentum. The Championship side's won three promotions in a row and are now in playoff contention.

He knows Chelsea can't take anything for granted, especially against a team backed by Hollywood stars like Ryan Reynolds.
“When you see a club grow, develop, improve and come up through the leagues, it's a great story,” said the Chelsea boss as he paid tribute to Wrexham counterpart Phil Parkinson.
“They've done a great job, I think Phil's done an incredible job...We know it's going to be a really difficult game. It's a club that's on the rise and there's a good energy in them.”
