Venus Williams, the 45-year-old seven-time Grand Slam champion, has accepted a wildcard invitation to play at the Indian Wells WTA hard-court tournament in March. This will mark her 10th appearance in the tournament, where she's a three-time semifinalist.
Tournament director Tommy Haas called it an “honour” to award Williams the first wildcard of 2026, praising her as a “legend of the game” and one of the most accomplished players in tennis history. Williams will compete in both singles and doubles, teaming up with Canada's Leylah Fernandez in the doubles event.
“I’m so excited to be heading back to Indian Wells and can’t wait to return home to play in California,” Williams said in a statement.
“I’m grateful to the tournament for having me back and giving me the opportunity to compete in both singles and doubles.”
Williams made history in January, becoming the oldest woman to play at the Australian Open. She accepted a wildcard invitation and gave 24-year-old Serbian Olga Danilovic a run for her money, ultimately falling in three sets in the first round.
The tennis star has played sporadically in recent years, returning from a 16-month hiatus at the DC Open last July.
