Hamburg extended their unbeaten run to six games (W2, D4) with a 1-1 draw against Mainz. Mainz, under Urs Fischer, have lost just two of their 12 matches in all competitions, and they got off to a great start.
However, Hamburg adjusted quickly, slowing the pace and taking control.
Hamburg pushed back, creating chances of their own. Warmed Omari's shot from the edge flew towards goal, but Daniel Batz was equal to it, parrying it away. Robert Glatzel followed up, but his effort was tame and easily gathered by the Mainz goalkeeper, adding to Hamburg's frustration.
It was starting to look like Hamburg's missed chances might come back to haunt them.
It was almost poetic justice when Mainz took the lead just before half-time. Danny da Costa's run down the right flank ended with a cross to the six-yard box, and Nadiem Amiri pounced, hooking a volley past the Hamburg goalkeeper – Amiri's seventh goal in as many Bundesliga games.
Sadly for Mainz, however, they couldn’t build on that after half-time, and began to chase the play, as well as giving away needless fouls, with Dominik Kohr fortunate not to see a second yellow card.
And it was that lack of discipline which ultimately led to Hamburg’s equaliser – Fabio Vieira tried to find the near post by slotting under the wall from a 25-yard free kick, but Phillipp Mwene got in the way and inadvertently deflected it towards the other post and past a wrong-footed Batz.
The game could've gone either way after that, with Sheraldo Becker's looping volley just missing the far post – a real chance to win it for Hamburg.
Given both sides' good form, the point will likely be welcomed by both teams, looking up the table rather than down.

Hamburg's unbeaten run is their longest in the top flight since 2011, when they went nine games undefeated under Thorsten Fink. Next up, a tough home test against RB Leipzig to start March.
Mainz, meanwhile, are breathing down the necks of the bottom three, having lost just once in their last five games – their quest to pull clear is alive and kicking.
