Lyon Coach Fonseca praises Ligue 1 as one of Europe's best

Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca praises Ligue 1, stating it's one of Europe's best leagues, ahead of match against Le Havre.

“Ligue 1 is a quality league, one of the best in Europe right now...”

Lyon's manager, Paulo Fonseca, has praised Ligue 1, stating that it's one of the best leagues in Europe. “I have no doubt about the value of Ligue 1. There are a lot of quality teams,"
”Fonseca said, highlighting the strength of the French top division.

Fonseca's comments come as Lyon prepares for their upcoming matches, with the team looking to build on their recent performances. The Portuguese manager's confidence in Ligue 1 is a boost for the league, which has seen some of its top teams struggle in European competitions. Despite this, Fonseca believes Ligue 1 is on par with other top European leagues.

“Ligue 1 is a quality league, one of the best in Europe right now,” he added, ahead of his fifth-placed team's date with struggling Le Havre on Sunday. The coach's comments come as his team looks to bounce back from a recent dip in form.

Like Lyon in years past, Ligue 1 is currently dominated by Qatari-backed Paris Saint-Germain, who are aiming for their fifth successive title this season. PSG's dominance has been a recurring theme in the league, with the club's financial backing allowing them to attract top talent and maintain a strong squad.

The last team to break PSG's dominance was Lille in the 2020-2021 season, showing that there's still room for other teams to compete. However, PSG's stronghold on the league has been a challenge for other teams to overcome.

One of PSG's former stars, Kylian Mbappe, famously took a swipe at those who questioned the level of Ligue 1 back in 2020 after Lyon knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League. In a message laced with sarcasm, Mbappe posted on social media "Farmers League", followed by a clown face emoji. Mbappe moved to Real Madrid in 2024, and his comments are still remembered as a reflection of the league's perception at the time.
