Marshall Munetsi, the Zimbabwean midfielder, is upset after being left out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad due to a calf injury. Munetsi, who has captained the team and been a key player, feels the decision was made too hastily, considering his club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, had informed the Zimbabwe Football Association that he was recovering well and even offered medical support.
Munetsi expressed his disappointment on social media, stating that representing Zimbabwe has always been a dream and wearing the national team's colors is the greatest honor of his career. He emphasized his unwavering support for the team and respect for the coach's decision, wishing the team all the best in the tournament.
“I had an injury recently but my club, Wolves, communicated with the association that I was recovering well and even offered medical support to ensure that I could participate at the AFCON,” Munetsi, 29, wrote on social media on Friday.
“Unfortunately, I received no follow-up communication, and decisions were made without clarity; speculation which wasn't the case.
“While I'm hurt, my unwavering support for the national team remains strong. I respect the coach’s decisions and stand behind the boys wholeheartedly.
"I will always be ready to defend the nation I love. Warriors has always been a dream, and wearing our colours is the greatest honour of my career. AFCON would have even been more significant,” he added.
Zimbabwe is making its fourth appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in the last five editions. However, they were previously banned from the tournament held in Ivory Coast due to government interference in the Football Association's affairs.
Marshall Munetsi, a key player, had appealed to administrators to resolve their issues, allowing Zimbabwe to participate in the Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers. Unfortunately, Munetsi won't be part of the tournament due to a calf injury.
Marshal Munetsi does not need the $10k that ZIFA owes each player for the qualifiers but he stood up for all of them after the Benin game. ZANUFA decided to punish him.
