Siraj and Bumrah Shine as India Dominate West Indies on Day 1
India vs West Indies, hosts gain upper hand on day 1 of 1st test

India vs West Indies 1st Test: Day 1 highlights, Siraj and Bumrah's bowling prowess, KL Rahul's half-century, and India's strong start in the two-match series.

“We played competitive cricket in England against a strong side. Performing like that gives you a different confidence...”

India's pace duo, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, delivered an impressive performance, dismantling the West Indies batting lineup and restricting them to 162 runs. Siraj claimed four wickets, while Bumrah took three, showcasing their dominance on the pitch.

In response, India reached 121-2 at stumps, with KL Rahul unbeaten on 53 and captain Shubman Gill contributing 18 runs. Despite a brief interruption due to rain and fading light, India managed to take charge, trailing the West Indies by 41 runs. The hosts will look to build on this momentum and level the scores or take the lead on the second day of the Test match.

Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to make up for his slow start by hitting seven fours after the 22-minute delay. However, the left-handed batsman was caught behind by Jayden Seales for 36.

Despite a hamstring cramp, Rahul steadied India's innings with a half-century, his 20th in Test cricket. His steady knock helped India build a strong foundation.

Roston Chase (24), Shai Hope (26), and Justin Greaves (32) got good starts, but the hosts managed to gain control. This dented the West Indies' chances of securing their first Test win in India since 1994, with the series now tied 1-1.

India's pace bowlers rocked the West Indies early on, after Tagenarine Chanderpaul fell for a duck on his Test return, gloving a delivery from Siraj to Dhruv Jurel. John Campbell soon followed, caught behind off Bumrah for eight, after a review, leaving the West Indies reeling at 20-2.

The moisture-heavy pitch assisted the bowlers, and Brandon King paid the price for a poor leave, edging a delivery from Siraj that crashed into the wickets for 13. Alick Athanaze also fell to Siraj, edging the paceman to Rahul at second slip for 12.

“We played competitive cricket in England against a strong side. Performing like that gives you a different confidence. You saw that confidence in me today,” said Siraj, who took 23 wickets when India drew a five-test series 2-2 against England earlier this year.

Kuldeep Yadav made an impact, claiming two wickets, including Shai Hope, whom he castled at the stroke of lunch, ending Hope's 48-run stand with Roston Chase.

After lunch, Siraj removed West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite with a swinging delivery that took the outside edge. Washington Sundar trapped debutant Khary Pierre for 11, and Bumrah bowled out Justin Greaves and Johann Layne, reaching his 50th wicket at home. Kuldeep finished the job by dismissing Jomel Warrican for eight.

The West Indies team is set to face a tough challenge in their two-match Test series against India, especially with key injuries to seamers Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph. This absence will be felt significantly, as the team looks to bounce back from their 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Australia on home soil in July. The West Indies haven't toured India in seven years, adding to the complexity of this series.

India, on the other hand, is embarking on a new era under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, following the retirements of cricket legends Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. With a fresh lineup and youthful energy, India aims to dominate the series and make a statement. They're looking to sweep the two-match series and put behind the painful memories of their previous home assignment, where they were hammered 3-0 by New Zealand.
