Panathinaikos has appointed Rafael Benitez as their new manager, replacing Christos Kontis who was let go after the team's 3-1 Europa League loss to Feyenoord on Thursday. The 65-year-old Spanish expert brings a wealth of experience from his time at Liverpool and Real Madrid.
According to Greek media, Benitez has signed a two-year deal with the Athens-based club, with an option to extend for another year. His annual salary is reportedly around 4 million euros ($4.66 million), making him the highest-paid coach in the Greek top flight.
Most recently, Benitez managed Celta Vigo, where he was dismissed in March last year after an eight-month stint. His new role at Panathinaikos will see him take charge of the team as they look to bounce back from recent defeats.
With an illustrious managerial career spanning top European clubs, Rafael Benitez boasts an impressive trophy cabinet, highlighted by Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph and Chelsea's 2013 Europa League title. His success extends to Valencia, Inter Milan, and Napoli, where he claimed domestic and European honors.

Benitez's new challenge lies in reviving Panathinaikos' glory days. The 20-time Greek champions are currently seventh in the Greek Super League, struggling for consistency. After a promising start to their Europa League campaign with an opening win, they've suffered consecutive defeats, leaving their European campaign in doubt. Benitez's task is clear: restore Panathinaikos' winning ways and propel them up the league standings.
