Leylah Fernandez celebrates with her trophy

Canada's Leylah Fernandez wins Japan Open title, defeating Tereza Valentova 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in the final. It's her fifth career title and second win of the year.

“Thank you so much for suffering with me this past week, past month and past year...”

Canada's Leylah Fernandez has won the Japan Open title, defeating 18-year-old Czech qualifier Tereza Valentova 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in the final. This victory marks Fernandez's second title of the year.

The world number 27 dominated the first set, winning 6-0 in just 29 minutes. However, Valentova fought back to take the second set 7-5. Fernandez regained her composure in the final set, securing a crucial break in the fourth game to win 6-3.

This win is Fernandez's fifth career title, following her victory at the DC Open in Washington in July. She praised her team, family, and loved ones for their support, saying, “Thank you so much for suffering with me this past week, past month and past year.”

The 23-year-old Fernandez claimed her fifth career title, marking the first time she's won two tournaments in the same year.

Despite playing with heavy strapping on her right thigh, Leylah Fernandez dominated the first set against 18-year-old Tereza Valentova, winning 6-0. However, Valentova rebounded strongly in the second set.

Valentova, ranked 78th in the world and in her first WTA final, seemed shell-shocked initially but came out firing in the second set and levelled the match with a 7-5 win.

Fernandez regained her momentum in the third set, ultimately sealing the win when Valentova's service return sailed into the net. The victory marked a triumphant moment for Fernandez, claiming her second title of the year.

Top seed Naomi Osaka withdrew from the Japan Open quarterfinals due to a leg injury, paving the way for Jaqueline Cristian to advance to the semifinals.

Leylah Fernandez, who defeated Rebecca Šramková 7-6(2), 6-3 in the quarterfinals, will face fellow Canadian Victoria Mboko in the opening round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week.
