Jerome Boateng has pulled out of a planned coaching internship at Bayern Munich due to fan backlash. The retired defender faced opposition from fans who were unhappy about his involvement with the club.
The controversy stems from Boateng's guilty verdict last year for assaulting a former girlfriend. Fans had voiced their objections, starting an online petition that gathered thousands of signatures. In response, Boateng decided to focus on his coaching license instead.
Boateng expressed gratitude to the club and coach Vincent Kompany for the opportunity, but ultimately chose to prioritize his own projects. The development clears the way for Bayern Munich to focus on their upcoming matches, including their recent 3-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Bayern fans strongly objected to Jerome Boateng's planned internship, citing his guilty verdict for premeditated bodily harm against his former partner. The backlash was fueled by an online petition titled “Setting borders against misogynistic violence: Jerome Boateng should not be allowed back to Bayern Munich,” which garnered several thousand signatures.
The controversy surrounding Boateng's potential return to Bayern Munich led to his decision to withdraw from the internship. In a statement, Boateng expressed his gratitude to the club leadership and coach Vincent Kompany, saying, “I am thankful to the club leadership and you, dear Vincent, for giving me trust and the opportunity to be part of that.” However, he decided to focus on his A training license and other projects, stating, “Following the recent discussion regarding myself, I have decided to focus on my issues such as the A training license.... that is where my focus is.”
Boateng also emphasized that Bayern's focus should be on the pitch, saying, “Your focus should be solely on the pitch and on extending this 13-match winning run.” This statement came after Bayern's 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach, which marked their 13th consecutive win across all competitions.
“Following the recent discussion regarding myself, I have decided to focus on my issues such as the A training license.... that is where my focus is,” he said in a social media post addressed to Bayern and Kompany.
“Your focus should be solely on the pitch and on extending this 13-match winning run.”
Bayern Munich secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, extending their unbeaten streak to 13 wins in 13 matches across all competitions this season.
Goals from Joshua Kimmich, Raphael Guerreiro, and Lennart Karl sealed the win for Bayern, who now lead the Bundesliga table with 24 points from eight matches, five points ahead of RB Leipzig. Borussia Monchengladbach, on the other hand, suffered a setback, extending their winless streak to 15 league games.
The match saw Borussia Monchengladbach's Jens Castrop receive a straight red card in the 18th minute for a studs-up challenge, leaving his team down to 10 men. Despite putting up a fight, they were unable to withstand Bayern's relentless pressure.
Following the recent fan protests, Bayern are currently considering canceling Jérôme Boateng's internship at the club. “I am thankful to the club leadership and you, dear Vincent, for giving me trust and the opportunity to be part of that,” Boateng said.
The 2024 trial marked the third instance in the bodily harm case involving Jerome Boateng.
The 37-year-old former footballer accumulated 76 appearances for Germany between 2009 and 2018. During his illustrious career, Boateng spent a decade at Bayern Munich, joining the club in 2011 from Manchester City where he played alongside Vincent Kompany. His time at Bayern was decorated with numerous accolades, including nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies.
Boateng recently announced his retirement after his contract with Austrian side LASK Linz was mutually terminated in August.
