Jerome Boateng bids farewell to professional football after an illustrious career, winning the 2014 World Cup and two Champions League titles with Bayern Munich.
“Football has given me a lot, now it's time to move on. Not because I have to, but because I'm ready...”
Jerome Boateng, the renowned German defender, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at 37. He shared the news through a heartfelt video on Instagram, reflecting on his illustrious career that includes winning the World Cup with Germany in 2014 and securing two Champions League titles with Bayern Munich.
Throughout his career, Boateng played for several prominent clubs, including Hertha Berlin, Hamburg, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Lyon, Salernitana, and LASK. His most successful period was with Bayern Munich, where he won nine Bundesliga titles and made 363 appearances. He also earned 76 caps for the German national team, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.
Despite his achievements, Boateng's later years were marred by off-field controversies, including a trial related to domestic violence allegations against his ex-wife. The case concluded with a warning and a suspended fine. Nevertheless, his legacy as one of Germany's most decorated defenders remains significant.
“I played for a long time, for big clubs and my country. I've learnt, won, lost and grown as a result,” Boateng said in the 65-second clip.
“Football has given me a lot, now it's time to move on. Not because I have to, but because I'm ready. I'm grateful for everything: the teams, the fans, the people who have carried me. And especially for my family, my children. They were always there for me.”
Jerome Boateng's football career reached its pinnacle in 2014 when he played a crucial role in Germany's World Cup-winning team in Brazil. His defensive prowess was instrumental in securing the nation's fourth World Cup title.
At Bayern Munich, Boateng was part of a dominant team that ruled German football for over a decade. During his time with the club, he won nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies, in 2013 and 2020. His impressive performances earned him a reputation as one of Germany's most successful defenders.
However, Boateng's later years were marked by instability. After leaving Bayern Munich in 2021, he had stints with Lyon in France, Salernitana in Italy, and LASK in Austria. His contract with LASK was mutually terminated in August 2025, and subsequently, he announced his retirement from professional football at 37. Despite his achievements, Boateng faced controversies, including a trial related to domestic violence allegations against his ex-partner, which resulted in a suspended fine.
The former centre-back, who won 76 caps for Germany, also attracted headlines beyond the pitch, facing legal proceedings over allegations of assault, which he has consistently denied.
Boateng's professional journey began at Hertha Berlin, where he developed his skills alongside his half-brother Kevin-Prince Boateng. He then moved to Hamburg, Manchester City, and eventually joined Bayern Munich in 2011, marking the beginning of his most successful period. During his decade-long stint with Bayern, Boateng won nine Bundesliga titles, two Champions League trophies, and numerous other honors, cementing his status as one of Germany's most decorated defenders.
