Dortmund Edges Frankfurt on Penalties in DFB Pokal Thriller
Borussia Dortmund shows resilience in overcoming Eintracht Frankfurt 4-2 4-2 on penalties, advancing to the next round of the DFB Pokal.
Borussia Dortmund edged out Eintracht Frankfurt in a penalty shootout, winning 4-2 after the match had ended 1-1 after extra time in the DFB Pokal second round. The win sent Dortmund through to the next round.
Eintracht's chances were dashed when Ritsu Doan's penalty sailed over the bar, and Dortmund's Gregor Kobel made a crucial save from Fares Chaibi's spot-kick attempt. Dortmund, meanwhile, showed composure, converting all four of their penalties to seal their spot in the next round.
Karim Adeyemi had an early opportunity for the visitors, but his shot didn't quite materialize. However, Frankfurt's Ansgar Knauff capitalized on a brilliant through ball from Mario Götze just seven minutes in, scoring the opening goal and giving the hosts the lead. The duo's clever combination, both being former Dortmund players, caught the visitors off guard.
The Dortmund team bounced back strongly after halftime, dominating possession and eventually equalizing through Julian Brandt's precise tap-in at the far post in the 48th minute. With a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City looming next week, Dortmund's response showed their determination to progress in the competition.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac made a strategic substitution, bringing on top striker Serhou Guirassy with 13 minutes remaining. This tactical move reflected Kovac's experience in high-pressure situations, having led Frankfurt to German Cup success in 2018.
Despite Dortmund's efforts, Eintracht Frankfurt continued to threaten, with Ritsu Doan hitting the bar in the 81st minute. The home side thought they had secured the win when Jonathan Burkardt scored in the 115th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to offside, setting the stage for a dramatic penalty shootout.
