Borussia Dortmund extended their unbeaten run at Signal Iduna Park to 10 matches with a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Cologne. The home side had to dig deep to secure a 2-1 victory, with the winning goal coming in the final moments of the game.

Cologne, despite being newly promoted, showed impressive form, accumulating 11 points from their first seven matches - the most by a promoted team in the last eight seasons. The visitors started brightly, with Eric Martel hitting the bar early on, setting the tone for a spirited performance.

Borussia Dortmund could have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Waldemar Anton was left unmarked in the box, but Martel made a crucial block to deny him.

Cologne's Said El Mala had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the opening quarter-hour, but he somehow managed to miss a one-on-one chance, directing the ball wide of the post, much to the frustration of manager Lukas Kwasniok.

Dortmund threatened again with 11 minutes to go before halftime, as Karim Adeyemi left Cenk Ozkacar behind and had a shot saved by Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe, who made a brilliant block from the German's effort.

Serhou Guirassy had a frustrating evening, coming agonizingly close to scoring in the 52nd minute only to be denied by a stunning point-blank save from Cologne goalkeeper Schwabe. Schwabe continued his heroics shortly after the hour mark, palming away Felix Nmecha's fierce strike over the crossbar with a breathtaking fingertip save.

Julian Ryerson's free-kick was expertly saved by Schwabe, who continued to defy Dortmund. However, Schwabe's heroics ultimately weren't enough, as Dortmund scored the winning goal in the final moments. Substitute Maximilian Beier scored the decisive goal, firing the ball through the legs of a Cologne defender and a despairing Schwabe.

The late drama sees Dortmund leapfrog Stuttgart into third position, but they are still seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

As for Cologne – who missed out on a first chain of consecutive away wins since May 2023 – this would have represented something of a scalp, but they remain in eighth place for the time being, with a European berth still a realistic possibility.
