Seattle Kraken forward Kaapo Kakko has been ruled out for six weeks with a broken hand, the team announced on Saturday. The injury occurred during the team's preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday when Kakko was slashed by Oilers defenseman Beau Akey. Kakko played only 1:59 worth of shifts before exiting the game due to the injury.
The Kraken are already dealing with other injuries, including Brandon Montour, Jared McCann, and Chandler Stephenson, who are day-to-day. Kakko's absence will likely provide opportunities for younger players like Jani Nyman and Berkly Catton to showcase their skills and potentially secure a spot in the top six.
Kaapo Kakko, the 24-year-old forward, was traded to the Seattle Kraken from the New York Rangers last year after struggling to find his footing with the Rangers. The trade marked a new chapter for Kakko, who had been a high draft pick with lofty expectations. During his time with the Rangers, Kakko accumulated 131 points, including 61 goals and 70 assists, in 330 games.
