MLS Roundup: LAFC and Vancouver Secure Wins

MLS updates: LAFC defeats San Jose Earthquakes 4-2 with Denis Bouanga's hat-trick and Son Heung-min's early goal. Meanwhile, Vancouver Whitecaps secures a playoff spot with a 7-0 win over Philadelphia Union, led by Thomas Müller's hat-trick.

The results have significant implications for the playoff standings...

Charlotte FC tied the MLS record for most consecutive wins with nine straight victories after defeating Inter Miami 3-0. Idan Toklomati's impressive hat-trick sealed the win for Charlotte, who have now matched the record set by the Seattle Sounders in 2018.

The match saw Lionel Messi miss a penalty in the 32nd minute, attempting a Panenka-style chip that goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina easily saved. Just two minutes later, Toklomati opened the scoring, heading in a cross from Kerwin Vargas. Charlotte's dominance continued into the second half, with Toklomati scoring his second goal off a pass from Wilfried Zaha.

Tomas Aviles's red card in the 79th minute further compounded Inter Miami's woes, allowing Toklomati to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Zaha was fouled by Sergio Busquets. This win puts Charlotte third in the Eastern Conference, just four points behind leaders Philadelphia Union, while Inter Miami slips to eighth place.

Toklomati, who has 11 goals on the season, worked his magic while Miami went down to 10 men after Argentine defender Tomas Aviles was shown a red card in the 79th minute.

It was Inter Miami's first match without suspended striker Luis Suarez, an Uruguayan standout for Liverpool and Barcelona before joining the MLS side.

Luis Suarez was handed a three-match suspension by Major League Soccer for spitting on a Seattle Sounders staff member after Inter Miami's loss in the Leagues Cup final. This incident occurred during a melee involving players and staff from both teams, where Suarez also grabbed Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas. The suspension means Suarez will miss Inter Miami's upcoming matches against Charlotte FC, Seattle Sounders FC, and DC United.

In a separate development, FC Cincinnati secured a playoff spot with a thrilling 2-1 win over Nashville SC. The decisive goal was scored by Brazilian midfielder Evander in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time. This victory marks a significant milestone for FC Cincinnati, solidifying their position in the playoffs.

New England Revolution secured a crucial point in their playoff bid with a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC, while Atlanta United's postseason hopes were dashed in a thrilling 5-4 loss to Columbus Crew. Toronto FC's elimination was confirmed despite their unbeaten streak of five games, all of which have ended in draws.

Uruguay striker Diego Rossi stole the show with a hat-trick in the first half, scoring in the 14th, 17th, and 39th minutes. His impressive performance helped Columbus Crew build a 5-0 lead, with Wessam Abou Ali scoring in the 25th minute and Andres Herrera netting in the 30th minute. Rossi's third goal was particularly impressive, showcasing his precision and skill.

Despite being 5-0 down, Atlanta United staged a dramatic comeback, scoring four goals in the second half. Jamal Thiare scored twice, including a late header in the 88th minute, while Miguel Almiron converted a penalty kick and Pedro Amador also found the net. However, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit, and Columbus Crew held on for a 5-4 win.

The results have significant implications for the playoff standings. New England Revolution avoided elimination, while Toronto FC's playoff hopes are now extinct. Atlanta United's loss confirms their elimination from postseason contention. Columbus Crew's win snaps their four-match winless drought and completes a season sweep over Atlanta.

St. Louis CITY SC secured a crucial 2-0 shutout win over CF Montréal, keeping them in the playoff chase. The victory marked CITY SC's second win over a Canadian MLS team. Conrad Wallem opened the scoring early for CITY SC, netting his first goal for the club and first in MLS play, with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner in the 11th minute.

Marcel Hartel extended CITY's lead to 2-0 in the 55th minute with a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the lower right zone. The defense stepped up for St. Louis, recording eight tackles and holding Montréal to zero shots on target. Roman Bürki earned his fourth clean sheet of the year, bringing CITY SC's total to six shutouts in 2025.

After the win, St. Louis CITY SC remains in the playoff chase, but Atlanta United FC's performance wasn't part of this match report. However, we do know Atlanta United FC has 26 points from 28 matches, with 5 wins, 11 draws, and 12 losses.

South Korean star Son Heung-min, who arrived at LAFC last month from England's Tottenham Hotspur, scored in the first minute and Gabon's Denis Bouanga had a hat trick in a 4-2 triumph over San Jose.

Bouanga added goals in the ninth, 12th and 87th minutes to spark the visitors at the home stadium of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.

LAFC's victory clinched a playoff berth for Vancouver, which got a hat trick from newly arrived Germany and Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller in a 7-0 home rout of Eastern Conference leader Philadelphia.

Thomas Müller scored a hat-trick for the Vancouver Whitecaps, netting two penalty kicks and a headed goal. His penalties came in the 30th minute and the first minute of first-half stoppage time. Müller sealed the win with the team's seventh goal in the 88th minute, helping the Whitecaps crush the Philadelphia Union 7-0. This performance showcases Müller's ability to rise to big occasions, even in the latter stages of his career.
