Rune's Early Exit
Meanwhile, Danish third seed Holger Rune's Japan Open campaign came to an end as he lost to Jenson Brooksby. Alcaraz's semifinal opponent is yet to be determined, but his form suggests he's a strong contender for the title.
Carlos Alcaraz, the 22-year-old Spaniard, is set to face Norwegian fourth seed Casper Ruud in his next match. Alcaraz recently reclaimed the top spot in the world rankings after winning his sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open earlier this month. Ruud, meanwhile, secured his spot in the next round with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Australian qualifier Aleksandar Vukic.
Alcaraz expressed his confidence boost after his previous match, saying, “These kind of matches help to keep my confidence really, really high. I played some great tennis.” His upcoming match against Ruud promises to be an exciting encounter, with both players showcasing impressive skills and determination.

“It's great to go through, to play another semi-final. It's special, because it's the first time I'm playing in Japan, here in Tokyo. To reach the semis in my first appearance is something great.”
Jenson Brooksby pulled off a stunning upset at the Japan Open, defeating third-seeded Holger Rune 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The American, ranked 86th in the world, outplayed Rune, landing 10 winners and 12 unforced errors, while Rune hit 20 winners but sprayed 35 mistakes, mostly from his forehand. This win marks Brooksby's fifth top-20 victory of the season and improves his record in ATP quarterfinals to 9-1.
“Once I get on a roll from a couple of matches, I just think I'm really able to get into my zone. I think that's one of my big strengths,” Brooksby said.
“I thought I had a pretty good plan on him coming out here. I had never played him before, but I think that's good maybe, someone who hasn't faced my unique skills, I guess.
“I had a good rhythm from the first two matches and thought I was playing really good tennis, and I think I just stayed a little bit more consistent today.”
Taylor Fritz battled past Sebastian Korda in a thrilling all-American quarterfinal match, ultimately prevailing 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3. This win sets up a semifinal showdown with fellow American Jenson Brooksby, who earlier defeated Holger Rune 6-3, 6-3.
Match Highlights:
- Fritz's Strong Start: Fritz took control of the first set, winning it 6-3 with a strong display of tennis.
- Korda's Fightback: Korda rallied in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker that he won 7-5, evening the match.
- Fritz's Decisive Third Set: Fritz regained his composure in the third set, breaking Korda to lead 5-2 before closing out the match.
