Former Liverpool and Chelsea women's manager Matt Beard took his own life, according to a coroner's court hearing in Ruthin, North Wales. The hearing was adjourned for a full inquest at a later date. Beard, 47, died in hospital on September 20 after paramedics were called to his home. A minute's silence was held before kickoff in all Women's Super League matches on September 21 to pay tribute to his contributions to women's football.


Beard had a decorated career, leading Liverpool to back-to-back Women's Super League titles in 2013 and 2014. He returned to Liverpool in 2021 and guided them back to the top-flight after two seasons in the second tier. His managerial journey also included stints at Chelsea, Millwall, West Ham United, Bristol City, and Burnley.


Tributes poured in for Beard, with colleagues and players expressing shock and grief over his untimely death. He was remembered as a great mentor, friend, and someone who cared deeply about developing women's football in England.

Throughout his career, Beard managed several clubs, including Millwall, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Burnley. He began his managerial journey at Millwall before moving to Chelsea in 2009. His most recent role was at Burnley, where he had a brief stint from June to August before leaving the club. Beard's contributions to women's football have been widely recognized, and his legacy continues to inspire players and coaches alike.
