Nottingham Forest suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland at the City Ground, extending Ange Postecoglou's winless start to five games. This marks the first time a permanent Forest manager has begun a tenure with five consecutive losses since the 19th century.

Sunderland's victory propelled them to third place in the Premier League, showcasing their impressive adaptation to life back in the top flight. The match against Forest was arguably their toughest test yet, and they passed with flying colors.

The hosts dominated possession in the early stages but struggled to create clear chances. Chris Wood had a header that flew well over the bar, a rare miss for the striker.

Sunderland capitalized on the hosts' sluggish start, taking a surprise lead with a well-executed set piece. Granit Xhaka's free-kick found Omar Alderete unmarked at the far post, and he headed the ball home.

The goal was shrouded in controversy, with Nottingham Forest feeling the free-kick that led to it was undeserved. Replays appeared to back up their claim, adding to the frustration.

Forest pushed hard for a response and nearly scored just before halftime when Dan Ndoye's effort deflected off Trai Hume and narrowly missed the post, leaving them to wonder what might have been.

The match took on an end-to-end nature, typical of Ange Postecoglou's teams, with both sides exchanging early chances in the second half.

Seeking to revitalize his struggling attack, Postecoglou made a double substitution, introducing fresh players in an attempt to shift the game's momentum.

Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, a boyhood Newcastle fan, had a strong desire to equalize for his team. He came close twice, first forcing a smart save from Robin Roefs at the near post and then curling a shot narrowly over the bar from the edge of the area.

Postecoglou's substitutions had a positive impact, with Omari Hutchinson and Igor Jesus both coming close to scoring. However, Roefs made crucial saves to deny them, keeping Sunderland in the lead as Forest increased the pressure.

Postecoglou's frustration grew as Forest's pressure failed to yield an equalizer. Chris Wood had two glaring opportunities, first seeing his volley saved by Roefs from point-blank range, and then heading wide from six yards when unmarked at the far post, 10 minutes from time.

Forest ultimately fell to a 1-0 defeat, their fifth loss in their last seven home league games. Sunderland, meanwhile, celebrated their first away league win of the season, finishing the evening in the top four of the Premier League table.
