Manchester United hold off Chelsea for crucial win as both sides finish with 10 men...
In a heated encounter that saw Chelsea and Manchester United both end the first half with 10 men, the Red Devils ran out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford to go 13 consecutive home Premier League (PL) H2Hs against the Blues unbeaten.
As the rain poured over Old Trafford, Chelsea’s prospects were heavily dampened just five minutes into proceedings when Robert Sanchez rushed out of his goal and brought down Bryan Mbeumo after being beaten to Benjamin Sesko’s flick-on.
Enzo Maresca made a double substitution in an attempt to turn the tide of the game, but Manchester United's relentless pressure persisted. The Blues were caught off guard when Bruno Fernandes scored his 100th United goal, heading in Patrick Dorgu's cross after barely staying onside. This setback forced Maresca to make further adjustments, and he brought on Andrey Santos for Cole Palmer in the 21st minute in search of a much-needed spark.
Despite the challenges, Maresca's tactics showed promise, and he may consider repeating some of the changes that worked in the future. Notably, he had previously experimented with Reece James in midfield, which added physicality and allowed Enzo Fernandez to push forward. However, the outcome of such tactics remains to be seen.
However, just as it was starting to look as though those changes had helped Chelsea limit the damage caused in a torrid first half, the visitors failed to deal with the cross from a short corner routine and Luke Shaw kept the ball alive for Casemiro to head it home and compound their misery.
United were enjoying themselves so much that the nine minutes of added time were met with cheers, but Casemiro received a second yellow for fouling Santos in the fifth of those having needlessly been booked for a challenge on Enzo Fernandez in the 17th minute.
Ruben Amorim made a tactical switch, substituting Benjamin Sesko with Manuel Ugarte, as Manchester United prepared for a gritty second half. The conditions were challenging, with water splashing up off the pitch, adding extra difficulty to the game. Despite this, Chelsea continued to push for a goal, and in the 60th minute, they thought they had found a lifeline when Tosin Adarabioyo flicked Reece James' corner towards Wesley Fofana. However, the goal was disallowed due to Fofana being offside before heading the ball in.

The match was intense, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. Manchester United's midfield dominance and quick transitions posed a significant threat to Chelsea's defense. Despite Chelsea's best efforts, they couldn't capitalize on their chances, and Manchester United held on for the win.
Chelsea's fortunes shifted dramatically in the final stretch, with Reece James delivering a crucial cross that Trevoh Chalobah headed past Altay Bayindir with about 10 minutes left to play, giving the Blues a glimmer of hope. However, nerves began to fray at Old Trafford as Manchester United pushed to seal their win. Despite Bruno Fernandes having a strike tipped wide, Manchester United held firm, with Manuel Ugarte blocking Andrey Santos' late attempt. The Red Devils then saw out seven minutes of added time to secure a 2-1 victory.
Match Impact:
Manchester United's Win: This win offers some relief to manager Ruben Amorim and extends their unbeaten home record against Chelsea in the Premier League to 13 matches.
